Empowering the Next Generation of African Leaders
Launched in 2012, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a visionary initiative aimed at developing the next generation of transformative leaders from Africa. By providing comprehensive support—including scholarships, mentorship, and leadership development—the program enables talented yet economically disadvantaged youth to pursue quality education and effect positive change in their communities.
Over the past decade, the program has reached over 40,000 young people through a network of 40 higher education institutions and non-governmental organizations, more than half of which are based in Africa.
Ten Years that Shook the Foundations
Celebrating its ten-year anniversary in 2022, the Scholars Program has significantly influenced global education by:
- Increased Education Access: The project has provided full scholarships to students who are academically talented but cannot afford to study at both high schools and colleges.
- Holistic Support Systems: Beyond financial aid, Scholars receive psychosocial support, career services, and leadership training, fostering a nurturing environment that promotes personal and academic success.
- Leadership Development: The transformative leadership emphasis equips Scholars with the attitude and skills that will enable them to lead reform and address key challenges in both local and global contexts.
International Cooperation Enlarging Learning Horizons
Success in the Scholars Program is bolstered by its important partnerships with educational institutions around the world:
- University of Edinburgh: The university has accepted 240 Scholars from 26 African countries since 2016 in 13 schools. The partnership has enriched academic life and provided Scholars with diversified educational experiences.
- CAMFED Ghana: In partnership with CAMFED, 4,000 adolescent girls in secondary school and 2,000 women in tertiary education were empowered with leadership skills as agents of change.
- University of California, Berkeley: The university offers the Alumni Scholars Impact Fund, which encourages graduates to pursue entrepreneurial activities that create economic opportunities in African communities.
Commitment Towards Future Growth
Building on a decade of accomplishment, the Mastercard Foundation is committing to doubling the scope of the Scholars Program over the course of a decade to assist another 100,000 youth.
This move is a testament to the foundation's commitment to removing barriers to learning and empowering talented African youth to lead social and economic development.
